CEN subcommittee function-SIYB Game Challenge-has been a great success in stimulating participants social innovative business idea and modeling a real business cycle. SIYB stands for Start To Improve Your Business; it is a game used by many companies to train employees, familiarizing them with the operation and development of a business. CEN uses the idea and methodology inside this game and innovate a revised version where participants assign their own business positions, create a product related to green living, engage in regular business activities, pitch in front of modeled investors, buy and sell stocks in the modeled financial market, and find sponsorship opportunities. After this exciting SIYB Game Challenge, all participants have a clearer understanding on how to see a problem inside the society and solve them using business ideas. - Time: 7:00 – 8:30 pm
- Venue: Rm 1103 (near lift 19)
On September 21, we had a great conversation with Prof. Erwin Huang on social innovation. It all started from an engagement ring. Coming from the business field, he first tossed out a case he was engaged in when he took over TSL Jewellery couple of years ago. At the time, business people had always been thinking about two things, and only two things– maximizing profits and minimizing costs. When he proposed to the management and shareholders that they may well do things more slowly and focus more on the value delivered to the consumers, it became a huge breakthrough from the long-existing conventional settings.
WebOrganic (有機上網) perfectly delivers the idea of cross-sector collaboration and the innovative model that nicely knitted every piece together. Given the condition where government was subsidizing HKD108 per person to get people in need access to Internet, Erwin looked into the opportunity in negotiating with telecom company to optimize the use of Internet package. Instead of buying packages for each individual user, he saw the excessive capacity where users didn’t use up their quota at the end of each month and he decided to leverage on that. It turned out to be a great success and the money saved from this model helped the children in the program to get one iPad mini each. Again this was done through wisely leveraging on resources and actively seeking opportunities by asking different questions.
At the end of the day, it all comes back to ourselves. Everyone can be a social innovator. You can start as simple as asking “why” to an existing phenomenon, the status quo. So start with yourself and be a change-maker!

Big Data is everywhere nowadays! on April 20, we heard from Mr. Ringo TANG, Operations & Logistics Manager of Uber HK, about how Uber utilizes big data to optimize its business operation and decision-making. Apart from collecting users’ and drivers’ data, Uber processes and visualizes the data so that we are able to have a glimpse on customers’ demand, how resources are allocated and even how the city is running.
